Neymar: Why The Brazilian Left Barcelona For PSG Revealed

Why Neymar Left Barcelona for PSG by Kingsley Ibeto

After days of transfer speculations and controversies surrounding Nerymar, he has finally join the French giant - PSG for a world record transfer deal worth £220m.

The 25-year-old won seven major trophies in his four seasons at the Nou Camp, including the Champions League once and La Liga twice.

But one may wonder why he left Barcelona for PSG which historically and sportingly, Barcelona is bigger in terms of finance and status, and have lower odds than PSG to win more accolades.

Here are my major ressons why I think Neymar left Barcelona:

1. FIFA Ballon d'Or/Under The Shadow of Messi: Neymar's departure from Barcelona breaks up the attacking trident he formed with Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Uruguay forward Luis Suarez.

Neymar arrived at Barcelona from Santos as a global star in 2013, but the Brazilian forward has always been overshadowed by Lionel Messi at Camp Nou and he is keen to be the main man for one of Europe's elite clubs.

Records has it that since Messi came into limelight no player has won the FIFA World Best of the Year or FIFA or Ballon d'Or at Barcelona.
In 2009 Xavi finished  third place behind Messi and C. Ronaldo. And, also, Andreas Iniesta and Xavi came close to winning it in 2010, the year Spain won the World Cup but they finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Again, Xavi and Iniesta respectively, finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in 2011 and 2012.

According to Sport , one of Neymar ’ s trusted advisors has urged the ‘ frustrated ’ forward to leave Barcelona, telling the 25- year - old: “ By the side of Messi you will always be second , you will always be in his shadow ”.

Messi is untouchable at Nou Camp. He is loved by everybody, and they can do everything possible to keep him and making happy. They can sell a player because of him, sack a coach because of him. In fact, one of any coach responsibities is to make Messi happen.

Take for instance, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a footballer who is not accustomed to failure. The man who once pronounced that he couldn't "help but laugh at how perfect I am" has enjoyed stellar success wherever he has travelled in his career, with one glaring exception - Barcelona.

Why? According to Zlatan,  Messi allegedly demanded a change of tactics from Pep Guardiola.

"It started well but then Messi started to talk," Ibrahimovic claimed in his book,  'I Am Zlatan' in 2011. "He wanted to play in the middle, not on the wing, so the system changed from 4-3-3 to 4-5-1. I was sacrificed and no longer had the freedom on the pitch I need to succeed."

Eto,o, Thiery Henry, Suarez, and Sanchez are all good but cannot outshine Messi at Barca because the team is build around him.

Neymar is yet to achieve his dream of winning the Ballon d’Or and it’s believed a move away from the Nou Camp could aid his bid for the prestigious prize.

At PSG, he will be the team's star player and also the focal point in
an ambitious sporting project.

2. Brazilian Factor: it is exciting and fun to be with your compatriot in the same club. No language barrier, better understanding, familiar faces and that kind of samba atmosphere.

Not less than  6 Brazilians are currently plying their trade at PSG namely: Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Maxwell, Dani Alves, Lucas Moura, Gustavo (no senior appearance yet) and more recently, Neymar Junior. Thiago Motta, is also Brazil-born midfielder who chose to represent Italy as a senior international. They should rename Paris Samba-Germain. (Lol)

3. Money: Every one likes money but the degree of likeness varies from one person to another. If I'm lying ask Samuel Etoo, Hulk, Oscar, Asamoah Gyan etc. (Lol) Wouldn't you want to become one of the richest players in the world alongside Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo? Hmmm! What a wonderful feeling!

This remind me of a saying "Men are like bank accounts. Without a lot of money they don't generate a lot of interest". So with Neymar's financial value, he has developed a lot of interest and fame.

Neymar is expected to earn €30 million per year and £782,000 weekly at Paris Saint-Germain after tax once the move from Barcelona is confirmed, having signed a new contract with the Catalan club only last year.

It has also been reported in Spain that the player's father received a payment of around €40 million as  his son completes a transfer to PSG.

Neymar is also expected to earn €30 million per year at Paris Saint-Germain after tax once as the move from Barcelona is confirmed, having signed a new contract with the Catalan club only  last year.

Money may also be a motivating factor why left Barcelona.

4. New Challenge: this simply means to try something new aside your present task especially when one has stayed long, or do his present work for a long time.

Neymar said this as he joined PSG.
"I have won all that a player can win,"

"And for the second time in my life, I'll contradict my father."

"Paris St-Germain's ambition attracted me to the club, along with the passion and the energy this brings," he added.

"I feel ready to take the challenge. I will do everything I can to help my new team-mates."

"Lionel Messi became my team-mate, and my friend on and off the pitch," he wrote. "I am proud to have played with you. We formed an attack with Luis Suarez that will endure forever.

"I achieved everything a sportsperson can achieve. I played with these guys in video games. I lived unforgettable moments in a city that is more than a city - it's a homeland.

"Barcelona and Catalonia will always be in my heart but I need a new challenge. PSG offered a bold new way forward and I'm ready. Right now I feel in my heart that it's time to go."

Will Messi also have a new challenge? Lem me come and be going....

  1. I disagree with some of your theory. Zlatan wasn't good enough for Barça, he wasn't mobile enough for Barça system. He lied to the press just to cover up for his failures at Barça. Eto'o , Henry, Sanchez all did well, they didn't need to outshine Messi to perform. Take a look at Suarez situation, he is doing exceptionally well at too, without having to outshine Messi. Naymar went to PSG just for the money just like every other Brazilian. No player from the French league has won FIFA player of the year in the past 20yrs, and him leaving to PSG won't suddenly make Messi under perform. Money was his motivation, nothing else.

  2. You made a point but Neymar has a chance to become the best at PSG than Barcelona. At PSG, he will be their main man like Messi at Barca. Zlatan was good, if he wasnt Guardiola wouldn't have splashed such a huge amount of money to bring him to Nou Camp. Eto'o , Henry, Sanchez all did well but were they given the due recognition and praise? The answer is NO.

  3. Secondly,That singular act of accepting the offer makes him the most expensive player in the world putting Messi and Ronaldo in the second and third positions respectively.
