Below are some notable terms which have become so popular due to the outbreak of coronavirus. Check them below:
1. Quarantine: this is the most common words you will hear on radio, television or the dailies. This word is pronounced thus kwawr-uh n-teen. It's so unfortunate that some celebrities, politicians and even lecturers wrongly pronounced it as kwawr-uh n-tain. Quarantine means seperation and restriction of people who are exposed to contagious disease (such as Covid19) to see if they become sick. These people may have been exposed to a disease and do not know it, or they may have the disease but do not show symptoms.
2. Isolation: this is another public health practice. It is used interchangeably with quarantine. However, there is a difference between the two terms. Isolation means to separates people who already contacted a disease from people who are not sick. This is done in order not to spread the disease. That's why we have isolation centres where coronavirus patients are treated.
3. Social Distancing: This term became so popular since the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic which I think is because it is one the measures put in place by health expert to curb the spread of coronavirus. Social distancing or physical distancing simply means keeping some spaces from another person. It involves keeping a distance of at least six feet (approximately 2 meters) from others and avoiding gathering together in large groups.
4. Palliatives: This is of the things Nigerians want to hear. They want Federal Government to provide it to cushion the effect of (especially hunger) coronavirus lockdown. Personally, I first heard this word when former vice President, Atiku Abubarka advised the government to provide palliatives to Nigerians. Since then it has gone to be one of the most used words by the Honourable minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq. Palliatives means something that makes a problem seem less serious but does not solve the problem or make it disappear. Palliatives reduces the effects of this lockdown but do not totally solve it. Simply put, palliatives is something done to make a bad situation seem better, but which does not solve the problem.
Haven mentioned and explained this words, tell me if you know the meaning or heard of them before the outbreak of coronavirus.
