Have you ever been to a mogue? Or have you ever seen a dead body? Many people's answer will be "No" because it could become a nightmare, irritating and unpleasant to their eyes 👀 and emotion. And yet, some too, cannot look at an injured person who had an accident due to the fact that it could be traumatic.

A lot of people cannot even take a glimpse of the dead body of their loved ones during funerals not to talk of digging out the dead, taking care of them, cloth them and even offer them cigarettes. In Nigeria it could be termed as an abomination or taboo.

But in the Asian part of this world, 🗺 Indonesia to be precised, the people of Toraja has a long history of a ritual known as Ma’nene ritual. In this tradition, the people exhume, clean, dress and display the dead to everyone to see. They clothe, feed, pose in a photograph, 📸 take care of their dead relatives and even offer them cigarettes.

This sound creepy right? But to them it is normal. They carry out this tradition till today.

Below are some pictures of Ma’nene rituals in Toraja:

The Torajans are an ethnic group indigenous to a mountainous region of South Sulawesi , Indonesia . Their population is approximately 1,100,000, of whom 450,000 live in the regency of Tana Toraja ("Land of Toraja"). Most of the population is Christian, and others are Muslim or have local animist beliefs known as aluk ("the way"). The Indonesian government has recognised this animistic belief as Aluk To Dolo ("Way of the Ancestors")
