Does N'Golo Kanté deserve to win the Ballon d'Or in 2021?
No, he doesn't.
Now this might seem stupid, given the brilliant performances that he has showcased in the latter rounds of the Champions League. And he surely deserves credit for that. But he's had some injuries this season and therefore, hasn't influenced Chelsea's season throughout.
But there's one man who's been absolutely sensational this whole season. He was definitely robbed of last season's Balon d'Or when the ceremony was cancelled, which was stupidity in itself, given that all major European leagues were completed except for the French Ligue. They should've conducted it with minimum number of guests or just announced it online. Or done something of that sort. It was unfair anyway.
No points for guessing though, we are talking about Robert Lewandowski. He's been the best no.9 in Europe for the past couple of seasons and his numbers back him really well. The goal machine has broken the Bundesliga scoring record this season by blasting in 41 goals. In the Bundesliga alone. His presence upfront was terribly missed when Bayern lost to PSG in the champions league quarters and one could argue that that game would've been more balanced had he played. He's been so consistent throughout and I can't seem to remember anyone else who's had this much of an influence this season.
Kante has been in the limelight lately for his brilliant performances and deservedly so. But I still feel Lewandowski is the man who should ultimately win football's biggest individual honour this year. Balon d'Or has favoured trophy numbers rather than individual stats for a long long time, so there's a good chance this could swing more in Kante's favour if France lift the Euros this summer.
Note: I have only love for Kante, that man is an absolute superstar.
