Can Messi win the Ballon d'Or after winning Copa America?
If you ask me that question 🙋 above I would say yes, most definitely, Messi is currently the favorite for the Ballon d'Or. When you look at the recent Ballon d’Or winners it is usually the best player on the best team or at least the best player to have won his league title and this year the (Top 5) league winners were Inter, Man City, Atletico, Bayern and Lille. The Champions league winners were Chelsea and the Euros and Copa America were won by Italy and Argentina respectively. If you dissect each of these squads only a few players seem to have an argument for the prestigious award.
Robert Lewandowski won the Bundesliga title this season having the greatest Bundesliga scoring season of any player ever surpassing Gerd Muller for the honour, and yet Lionel Messi has scored more goals in 2021! (he hasn’t outscored him in the 2020/21 season) which would’ve been even more ridiculous but I wouldn’t place him ahead of Messi because I believe the Copa America is more prestigious than the Bundesliga title and because I feel that in general whether he outscores Lewandowski or not that he has a greater influence on the game as Lewandowski.
The other two players worthy of mention are Harry Kane and Jorginho who really each need what the other have. Jorginho lacks the individual brilliance and statistics that Kane has while Kane lacks the trophies that Jorginho possesses.
This all in all guarantees the Ballon d’Or falls in Messi’s lap unless some kind of unexpected controversy happens or Lewandowski scores a hattrick every game from now until the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

I’m also pretty sure this makes Messi the first player to win The Ballon d’Or award in three different decades. The Goat.
