Are Tottenham Genuine Title Contenders?
Tottenham Hotspurs are looking to be a genuine contender for the “Best of the rest” tag or the third spot on the PL table in the upcoming season. Antonio Conte’s Spurs have improved a lot under him and part of the reason behind this improvement has been their transfer policy. Spurs ended the season with just one loss in their last eleven PL games.
They secured UCL football for the upcoming season and that is attracting more and more stars to the North London club. Fabio Paratici, who joined Spurs last year is a great managing director and he had worked with Conte during their Juventus days. This has certainly benefitted Spurs.
Tottenham had signed impactful players like Bentacur, Romero, and Kulusevski over the last twelve months. Kulusevski commendably complemented the most successful duo in PL history - Kane and Son since his January move.
One month into the summer transfer window, Spurs have already signed backup goalie Fraser Forster, Croatian winger Ivan Perisic, and exciting young midfielder Yves Bissouma. There are rumors of Spurs going for Clement Lenglet. They have signed one of Everton’s relegation saviors Richarlison for £60m. They have finally found a backup in the CF position. Kane will finally get much-needed rest during the season. Richarlison can also share left-wing duty with Kulusevski.
Spurs look like an exciting team on paper and under a manager who has the experience of winning a PL title before, would be keen on performing on top levels and even challenge Man City and Liverpool for extended periods. Chelsea, fresh after their new take-over are yet to make any significant signings (Raphinha not yet confirmed) whereas Arsenal and Man United are in the rebuilding phase. It remains to be seen whether West Ham can perform up to the levels they showed last season.
Conte who brought one of the biggest revolutions in English football in 2016 by introducing a three-at-the-back system may well be the man who would bridge the gap between the top two and the rest in the upcoming season.
