Why It Is Wrong For Premier League To Stop Taking The Kneel

Ultimately, I believe that taking a knee is a simple gesture that does not require two or three minutes to complete. I think the Premier League's reasons for it not happening at every game sound a little like they're just giving in and giving up!

I believe it is important for players to take a knee to show solidarity and to speak out against racism. Okay, things must be done off the field and actions must be taken to prevent racist incidents on and off football fields, but let me be clear: I believe the movements should and must continue until we see the necessary changes.

Racist incidents increased by 43% in 2019 over the previous year! This figure should astound us all.

I believe our game is becoming more diverse, which is a good thing, but there is still a lot of bigotry and racism, undoubtedly and unfortunately.

Of course, some may argue that "politics has no place in sports," or something to that effect, but is racism a political issue? I don't believe so! It's a social issue that needs to be addressed by society as a whole. Of course, you could say or argue that it's a personal choice. And I agree, but shouldn't we create a space and opportunity for those players who want to demonstrate solidarity? And my concern is that the Premier League's plans will disadvantage players who want to show solidarity but can't because they play for smaller clubs!

We have decided to select significant moments to take the knee during the season to highlight our unity against all forms of racism - Premier League Captains

Now, I hope I'm wrong and that every team and every player will have numerous opportunities to show support and solidarity throughout the season, but I fear that this may start to limit the movement, which would be a shame because I believe it's an important message that needs to be spread. Now I follow Formula One, and while they no longer take the knee, they do show a video of F1 standing together against racism before each race!

Furthermore, they highlight the issues that we are increasingly confronted with. As long as football is willing to show that kind of unity and support, I have no problem with the knee being reduced, but only if it is not the Premier League easing off the gas pedal! Because now is not the appropriate time.

Now is the time to take action and move forward more quickly.
